Sheffield's defining housing feature is stone — whole streets in Walkley, Crookes, Nether Edge and Sharrow are built from locally-quarried sandstone with stone-slab roofs on deep, generous rafters. These are beautiful but thermally demanding properties: stone walls have poor insulation value, and stone-slab roofs are heavy enough that structural changes are rarely welcome. The city also has significant late-Victorian red-brick terrace stock, a huge inter-war semi belt on the eastern and southern edges, and substantial post-war detached houses in Dore and Totley that sit at the high, cold edge of the city. Sheffield's altitude — significant parts of the city sit above 200 metres — means that heat loss through the roof is a bigger deal here than in most of the Midlands.
